Civil Discourse

The Institute encourages elected officials and candidates to increase their commitment to civil discourse.

Civil discourse is an open discussion that acknowledges the right of every individual to voice his/her opinion in frank, respectful and vigorous terms, without resorting to abusive rhetoric.  The National Institute for Civil Discourse is committed to fostering an open exchange of ideas and expression of values that will lead to better problem-solving and more effective government.  Director Brint Milward expands on this theme in his column “The Last (Civil) Word”
